TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe successful in RegioWIN 2030 Boost for the innovation region Regional lighthouse projects receive funding totaling 19 million euros
The TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe has received an award. On April 14, 2021, it was awarded a prize in the RegioWIN competition of the state of Baden-Württemberg (Regional Competitiveness through Innovation and Sustainability) for its competition entry and its regional development strategy up to the year 2030. Particularly noteworthy: TRK is one of the few regions where all three submitted lighthouse projects were awarded. This means that they will receive a combined total of 19 million euros in funding, including from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In total, RegioWIN will thus trigger a direct investment volume of 31.1 million euros and further accelerate the innovative strength of TRK in particular.
Dr. Frank Mentrup, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH and Lord Mayor of the City of Karlsruhe, is delighted about the awards: "RegioWIN is an important driver for the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe in developing and implementing innovations in the fields of energy, mobility and digitization. The projects and networks established here are successful because municipalities, science and business work closely together in them." As the lead partner, TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH was responsible for the overall coordination of a number of regional players from business, science and municipalities, who worked together intensively to develop four key projects and three lighthouse projects. They are now to have a direct impact on the quality of life in the region and make it fit for the future!
Among the award-winning lighthouse projects are regioKArgoTramTrain, the prototype of a new type of freight light rail system that will be tested in a real-life laboratory from as early as 2022. It is intended to transport passengers and goods from the region to the city at the same time in order to provide a remedy for the steadily increasing delivery traffic in urban areas with a holistic delivery concept. Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) is acting as consortium leader for "regioKArgoTramTrain" in a consortium of numerous well-known partners. "RegioKArgoTramTrain" is an elementary sub-project of the new overall initiative "regioKArgo".
With the lighthouse project RegioMORE a regional, cross-border "Digital Ecosystem" is to be created in Bühl, which will seamlessly network medium-sized companies in the local economy as well as science, schools, citizens, and municipalities. As an innovation center, it creates the necessary infrastructure for experimentation, digitization and the development of new business models. RegioMORE is being driven forward in a lead role by the city of Bühl, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and USM U. Schärer Söhne GmbH.
The third lighthouse project of the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe is called LastMileCityLab and will add another component to the Bruchsal Reallabor: the world's first city lab for developing and testing freight transport technologies in urban areas, i.e. on the last and penultimate mile. In addition to auto- nom-driving cargo bikes and delivery robots, the VoloDrone, an electrically powered cargo air vehicle, will also supply the city neighborhoods with goods in the future. The project is managed by efeuCampus Bruchsal.
"We are of course very happy about these awards, because visionary solutions for central challenges such as climate change and sustainability have been developed within the framework of the regional development strategy of the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe 2030 under the motto 'Region on the Move - Shaping Transformation Together'," said Jochen Ehlgötz, Managing Director of TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH.
